You Deserve to Feel Great. I’m Here to Help.

Seanna Mahaney, a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, provides counseling services to individuals of all ages in the Vancouver, WA- Portland Metro area.

She especially enjoys working with children and families and has specialized training in working with children under the age of five. Seanna has extensive training in trauma-informed practices, and is certified in Child-Parent Psychotherapy, a treatment designed to help young children and their caregivers who have experienced traumatic events.

My Background

Seanna received her counseling degree from Pacific University. She has previously worked as a therapist in community mental health settings, provided school and home-based therapy services, and has also been a consultant/specialist for early learning programs in the area. Before working as a therapist, Seanna worked as an aid in Special Education classes focused on children with communication disorders and on the Autism Spectrum. She also worked with youth living in psychiatric residential treatment centers.

Seanna’s approach is integrative and draws on multiple theories and treatment techniques. Attachment theory and trauma-informed treatments often provide the foundation for therapy. Other techniques used in therapy could be cognitive-behavioral, solution-focused, narrative, or mindfulness tools. When working with children, play therapy is often utilized. Play is an important tool for communication and learning for children. Child Play Therapy is also a way to help the child feel comfortable in session. Parents are asked to participate in their child’s sessions to help the child feel safe and supported, to help strengthen the parent-child relationship, so that they can help the child practice new skills in their daily lives. Parent coaching is also an option used to help supplement family therapy sessions as needed. Because there are many people involved in supporting a child’s growth, Seanna works to coordinate and connect with all the important individuals in your child’s life.

Outside of work, Seanna enjoys spending time with family, being outside (especially during the beautiful Pacific Northwest summer), yoga, and reading.

My Approach & Philosophy

Each individual has a unique story to share and a unique path to healing. I believe that you are the expert of your own life, and helping people navigate struggles, share their stories, and develop strong relationships with themselves and their loved ones is a gift that I am grateful to experience.

I believe that therapy is a collaborative relationship and that it is essential that you feel safe and heard. I work hard to listen without judgment; my style is compassionate, calm, and direct. I believe in the power of play and laughter in the healing process. Because mental health is strongly connected to physical and spiritual health, I hope to guide individuals to become healthier in many aspects of their lives.

Issues surrounding children, parenthood and child development hold a special place in my heart. Parenthood is both an amazing gift and also a source of challenges or mixed emotions. I strive to help children and their caregivers connect with one another and become more resilient. My goal is always to help individuals, caregivers, and children leave therapy feeling hopeful and empowered in their ability to cope with future challenges that may arise.
